This One Summer – And Other Cool Things by Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki

To inaugurate the D.G. Ivey Library graphic novel collection, WGSI has invited Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki to come discuss their new graphic novel, This One Summer. To talk about the novel, and other things, we have a panel of University of Toronto faculty members, Judy Han, from Geography, Naomi Morgenstern from English, and Sarah Trimble from WGSI who will ask questions of the authors, and then open the floor to audience! Please join us for what promises to be a very fun and thoughtful event. The event is open to the public, and meant to encourage faculty and students to make use of the D.G. Ivey Library graphic novel collection.

Mariko Tamaki is a writer and performer. Her work includes the novella Cver Me, creative non-fiction collections True Lies and Fake ID, comics Emiko Superstar (with Steve Rolston) and Skim (with Jillian Tamaki), and the young adult novel (You) Set Me On Fire. Her most recent book, This One Summer (with Jillian Tamaki), won a Governor General’s Award in 2014. Her debut as a screenwriter/actor, Happy 16th Birthday Kevin, premiered at the Inside Out Festival in Toronto in May 2013. Mariko’s stories have been broadcast on national radio and she has appeared on stages, in various incarnations of herself, across North America.

Jillian Tamaki is a Calgary-raised cartoonist and illustrator currently based in Toronto. She is the co-creator of This One Summer with her cousin, Mariko Tamaki, which won a Governor General’s Award in 2014. Their previous collaboration, Skim, was nominated for a Governor General’s Award in 2008. A graduate of the Alberta College of Art and Design, Jillian has been illustrating and writing for magazines, newspapers, books, television, and other venues for over 10 years. She has produced two books of personal work, in addition to many minicomics, and her webcomic strip, SuperMutant Magic Academy, will be collected by Drawn & Quarterly in 2015.
