2023-2024 Community Knowledge Alliance Call for Proposals

Deadline: January 15, 2024

Community Knowledge Alliance – Call for Proposals 2023-2024

The Community Knowledge Alliance (CKA) fund is meant to galvanize, encourage, and facilitate discussions across different sites of intellectual inquiry such as non-profit settings, workplaces, grassroots social movements, municipal, provincial, national, international, and transnational government settings, universities, and sites and forms of cultural production including musical, literary, visual, or performance.

In keeping with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of WGSI’s undergraduate program, this year’s theme will be centered on “Anniversaries, Generations and Absences.”  Anniversaries tend to invoke the past through rituals of celebration and/or commemoration, But what is “it” that we are marking? And how do the ways we mark it matter? Anniversaries often evoke arrival (something was created) or loss (something ended). In bringing students, faculty and community into inter-generational relation and co-creation, how can we move beyond such binary understandings of anniversary and the nostalgic or triumphalist narratives they support? How can  other vocabularies offer a different and more nuanced engagement with anniversary, generations of knowing and the making of traditions, making space for forgetting, haunting, trace, silence, and unknowing? We invite proposals that engage with these questions.

The CKA committee is composed of three WGSI faculty members and one graduate student who have a new budget of $15,000—an increase of $5,000 from last year. Normally, two to three projects are funded each year. However, at the committee’s discretion, more or fewer projects may be funded. More information about last year’s funded projects can be found here

Applications must have at least one WGSI faculty member (this includes affiliate faculty).  Project proposals are to be a maximum of two pages, including a program description and rationale, list of applicants, student involvement, and a budget.

Please email proposals to the WGSI Administrative Assistant at wgsi.admin@utoronto.ca  by Monday, January 15th, 2024.
