The Faculty of Music is excited to announce that Nina Fukuoka, composer and DMA student in music composition from Columbia University, will be onsite visiting the Faculty this week, Tuesday, April 5 & Wednesday, April 6. Fukuoka’s innovative and experimental works have been premiered and featured across Europe at Musica Privata (Lodz, Poland), De Munt/La Monnaie (Brussels, Belgium), Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Musica Polonica Nova (Wroclaw, Poland), and Klangwerkstatt (Berlin, Germany). Her piece, Sugar, Spice & All Things Nice, premiered at the Warsaw Festival in 2020 and is scheduled to make its US premier this May at the MATA Festival in Brooklyn, NY.
During her visit, Fukuoka’s piece, Sugar, Spice & All Things Nice, will be on video display in the lobby of the Edward Johnson Building and we invite all of our community members to come by to experience Fukuoka’s work. Here is the program note of her work:
A Woman‘s Emotionality and Musicality. What does it mean?
There are billions of us.
Anger detracts from her beauty.
Who are our heroes? They are adult, strong, assertive, and relaxed. Or perhaps laughing unstoppably, overexposing emotions, and weary.
Go ahead, smile.
The undisputed majority of male composers in a music history textbook.
He‘s playing like a girl.
Should you correct and remedy the injustice we have encountered on our way to becoming musicians?
I’m sorry. I wasn’t being serious, obviously.
