Natalie Zemon Davis (1928 – 2023)

The Women & Gender Studies Institute is deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague, friend, and mentor Natalie Zemon Davis. We at the WGSI consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have been a part of the life and academic journey of such an instrumental figure in the field of women’s history.

Kathryn P. Morgan (1943 – 2022)

The Women and Gender Studies community mourns the loss of Kathryn Pauly Morgan, mother to Daniel Pauly, sister to John, Charles, Dave, and Mark Pauly, and daughter to Leon and Estelle Pauly. An instrumental actor in the foundation of the Women’s Studies program at the University of Toronto, Kathryn and her impact on feminist scholarship will always be remembered.

Bev Bennett (1928 - 2022)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bev Bennett. Although she preferred her extensive philanthropy to be anonymous, we wish to acknowledge the significant donation Bev made during the formative years of the program. As WGSI celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first Women’s Studies courses at the University of Toronto, we pay tribute to Bev and her generosity. We extend our condolences to her family.

Margrit Eichler (1942 – 2021)

The Women and Gender Studies Institute fondly remembers our inaugural director Margrit Eichler. The Margrit Eichler Award was established in honour of Margrit’s dedication to the department and fierce leadership.

Brianna Hersey (1981 – 2018)

The WGSI Community is deeply saddened by the loss of Brianna Hersey, an activist, leader, rebel and voice for gender equity. At the time of her passing, Brianna was a PhD Candidate at The Women and Gender Studies Institute, and a scholarship has been established in her memory.
